Cyclone Mocha further intensified into a ‘very severe’ storm (118-220 km/hr) Friday morning but is unlikely to have a direct bearing on India as it is expected to move towards the Bangladesh-Myanmar coast.
The cyclone, pronounced ‘Mokha’, is expected to make landfall between Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh and Kyaukpyu in Myanmar, close to Sittwe, around Sunday afternoon. At the time of landfall, the storm will be in the ‘very severe’ storm category with a maximum wind speed of 150 to 160 km/hr gusting to 175 km/hr.
According to the 5.30 am satellite updates recorded by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Mocha was located in the central and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal region. It lay 520 km west-northwest of Port Blair, 1,010 km south-southwest of Cox’s Bazar and 930 km south-southwest of Sittwe.
“The storm is likely to move north-north-eastwards and intensify further over the east-central Bay of Bengal,” the IMD’s weather update said.
As the storm rages on and moves away from the Indian coast, it could help the disturbed ocean and atmospheric conditions to resettle in the coming few days. This is crucial ahead of the incoming southwest monsoon winds over the Andaman Sea. Normally, these winds arrive over the Andaman region by the middle of May before they hit the Kerala coast on June 1, kickstarting the four-month-long crucial summer monsoon season.
